Skin Undertone Test

Warm, cool, or neutral — find out in 60 seconds

Answer 5 quick questions to find your undertone — warm, cool, or neutral.

What is a skin undertone?

Undertone is the hue beneath your skin's surface — warm (golden, peachy), cool (pink, blue), or neutral (balanced). Unlike your skin tone, it never changes with sun or seasons. It quietly decides which foundation melts in instead of sitting on top, which blush looks natural, and even which T-shirt white makes you glow.

Three at-home undertone tests

1. The vein test

In natural daylight, look at your inner wrist. Green-leaning veins point to warm, blue or purple to cool. If you honestly can't decide, that itself is the answer: neutral.

2. The jewelry test

Hold gold then silver against your bare face in a mirror. One usually makes skin look brighter and more awake; the other can read dull. Gold = warm, silver = cool, both = neutral.

3. The white-fabric test

Drape pure white, then cream, near your face. Cool undertones light up in stark white; warm undertones glow in cream and off-white. Same on both? Neutral again.

Using your undertone in makeup

Foundation shades are usually marked W (warm), C (cool), or N (neutral) — that letter matters more than the depth number. Undertone-matching is also the heart of the K-beauty approach: in our K-Beauty Makeup Course, Ksenia shows how to build a glass-skin base and pick gradient-lip shades for your exact undertone — $15, ages 11–17.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my undertone with the vein test?

Look at the veins on your inner wrist in natural daylight. Greenish veins suggest a warm undertone, blue or purple suggest cool, and a mix you can't quite call is usually neutral. It's a quick check — the quiz above combines it with four more signals for a reliable answer.

What's the difference between skin tone and undertone?

Skin tone is the surface shade (fair, medium, deep) and it changes with sun. Undertone is the hue underneath — warm, cool, or neutral — and it never changes. Two people with the same skin tone can have opposite undertones, which is why the same foundation looks different on them.

Does gold or silver jewelry decide my undertone?

It's one clue, not a verdict: gold tends to glow on warm undertones and silver on cool ones. If both genuinely look good, that points to neutral. Always combine it with the vein and white-fabric checks.

Why does undertone matter for makeup?

Foundation that matches your tone but not your undertone looks grey or orange at the jawline. Undertone also picks your most flattering blush and lip families — peaches and corals for warm, pinks and berries for cool, almost anything for neutral.
